When you buy your first house, you’ve generally made the biggest investment of your life. It, and your family, need protection against intruders. There are any number of home security products out there, but before you start spending money you might want to apply some real consideration and common sense. Here are four essential ideas for keeping your home safe.
When you move into your new home, the first thing you should do is change the locks. You never know who may be holding onto keys or how many copies are out there. This is one thing you don’t want to skimp on, as many experienced burglars have no problem picking cheap locks. Get some heavy duty lock hardware designed for maximum security. If possible, you should get electronic locks that use keypads or biometric scanners rather than traditional keys.
Install Alarm Systems
This is one of the best protections you can have. When an alarm goes off burglars usually run away, fast. Modern systems can automatically alert the police, notify you on your phone, integrate with surveillance camera systems, and more. Whole-house systems can be more affordable than you might think. Even if your budget is tight, you can find a number of alternative home alarms. Just a decal on your window that says your home is protected by alarm systems can be enough to deter intruders.
Plenty of Light
Adequate lighting is another way to deter thieves. They are less likely to approach your home if they’re in full view of the neighborhood. Be sure to place bright lights at each entry. You could also place motion-activated lights around the yard that will both illuminate and startle invaders. Be sure to cut back any branches or shrubs that could provide enough cover to conceal trespassers. You might also want to put interior lights on timers at night. Lights going on and off can make it look like somebody inside is up and about to discourage thieves.
A fence around your property is one of the best deterrents there is. Check with your local building codes beforehand, but put up the highest fence you can around the edges of your property. Chain link is often preferred since it’s affordable and long-lasting. On the other hand, you may want wood fencing because a potential intruder will think twice about climbing a fence if they have no idea what’s on the other side. Contact a local fence company like Holman Fence LLC or someone similar to see what your options are.
Remember that home security is an investment in your family’s safety. If an intruder does take an interest in your house, having the right protection in place can be enough to make them move on.
